January 2011 - Land is offered for sale to interested purchasers, including area of station and failed residencial block.

Early 2010 - It is announced that Paco station has been saved.

2009 - Reports that the land that contains the original Paco station may be up for sale.

Railway preservation has been mostly over looked in the Philippines over the years. A lack of interest in this history has seen only a handful of steam locomotives preserved across the mainstream and industrial rail systems. Most are in a bad condition, only one sugarfield version believed still steamable on Negros.

But not only steam has been the looser over the years, many very interesting diesel locomotives have operated across the islands, most also now gone on to suffer the fate of there earlier cousins.

In 1999 I first visited the Philippines and saw what was a industry in decline, one that I never expected to see again. I left wishing to show these railways to the world, thus leading to what is now the PRHS, but never really gave a great thought to the idea of major preservation attempts being made there.

Two subsequent visits later so much had changed for me. I had met many people with similar interests, both in the Philippines and overseas. I had made friends with a local Sydney resident called Bill Sullivan and we arranged to meet during early 2007 for a couple of times. We had talked about the railways there endlessly, we even floated the preservation idea a lot, but this was just a chance to actually go see these railways together in person.

The second day out was to be a pivitol one for Philippine railway preservation as we met local railfan Harvey Smoller, as well as my friend Edward Manapol (then working for PNR) and went to Caloocan workshops.
As always, the usual large amount of locomotives and carriages were sitting there, some little changed from my first look in 1999, all still waiting for the moment that need will hopefully see them placed back out on the rails. Some of this rollingstock was just normal day to day stuff, some however, like the carriage of former President Marcos, had much history behind it.
Yet desite the impressiveness of all these items, it was to be a lonely, derelict little BUDA car laying overgrown out back that lead us to say that "This stuff needs to be preserved".
Unlike so many other plans, this one took root and kept rolling. Eventually it became waht is now the 'Railways and Industrial Heritage Society Phils Inc', and under this name is still continuing to this day.

Bill sadly passed away last year, but had he not been part of this monumental moment in Philippine railway preservation history, it may not have got to where it is today.
These pages covering preservation are dedicated to him, preservation past, present and future.

Along Da Riles was first conceived in 2008 when the Philippine Railways SIG was transforming into the 'Philippine Railway Historical Society' and was starting an ill-concieved project to help a railway society in the Philippines that was to save heritage items for the future.

Despite the money raising activities ceasing, Along Da Riles continued to gain popularity. With no income flowing in, the magazine was up to a couple of generous Aussies to keep going until the numbers were becoming to large.
It was then decided to offer an e-zine version with the more common paper version.

Currently a very limited service operates between Tutuban and Alabang seven days a week.

This service is limited to only 3 or 4 runs a day and is due to the Linkage rebuild project.

Tutuban - Caloocan

Closed for rebuild, section to workshops utilized for movements of rollingstock for maintenence.

Tayuman - North Port

Freight only line, not used since closure of ICTSI terminal in Laguna.

San Pedro - Carmona

Closed for rebuild since 2006.

LONG DISTANCE SERVICES

Tutuban - Legaspi

Closed since 2006, about to be rebuilt and due to open late in 2009.

Calamba - Batangas

Line due for rebuild.

The most you will pay for any trip between the above stations is P15 which works

Code Yellow 1 There will be a slight delay in the arrival and departure of trains in the stations.
Code Yellow 2 Train operations will be temporarily suspended due to technical problems.

NOTES FOR THE VISITOR

The LRT and MRT systems are a fast, cheap and convenient way of getting

to locations around Manila.

It should also be noted that the trains can get very crowded even outside of peak period times and seats are certainly considered a luxury.
If you’re a photographer interested in these systems you should be ready for the rather unfriendly nature of the security guards on all stations.
They do not wish you to take photographs and are far from willing to listen to any explanations you may have for wanting to do so.

Monday to Sunday (trains run at regular intervals)

5:00AM First train leaves the Baclaran Station bound for Monumento.

9:00PM Last northbound commercial train leaves Baclaran Station for Monumento.

9:30PM Last southbound commercial train leaves Monumento Station for Baclaran.

The line is to be extended south from Baclaran to Cavite in the future.

LRT1 Fares!

The most you will pay for any trip between the above stations is P15 which works

out to be less than 50c Australia as of June 2007.
Short journeys attract lesser fares!

Delay Codes for passengers!

In cases of emergencies or unexpected events, the following codes are announced to inform the passengers about the current status of train operations:
Code Yellow 1 There will be a slight delay in the arrival and departure of trains in the stations.
Code Yellow 2 Train operations will be temporarily suspended due to technical problems.

NOTES FOR THE VISITOR

The LRT and MRT systems are a fast, cheap and convenient way of getting to locations around Manila. It should also be noted that the trains can
get very crowded even outside of peak period times and seats are certainly considered a luxury.
If you’re a photographer interested in these systems you should be ready for the rather unfriendly nature of the security guards on all stations.
They do not wish you to take photographs and are far from willing to listen to any explanations you may have for wanting to do so. Try restricting all photos
